Trees of New Zealand
With the maori creation myths as my guide, I began to look closely at the 2,000 year old Kauri trees in the far North of New Zealand. Growing as high as 50 meters with girths of up to 16 meters these cathedral-like giants seem more like portals to another world than trees of the forest. The myths are powerful.
For this series I made a paint from the red volcanic earth of the Waipoua region of North Island on which the Kauris grow and using burnt kauri twigs as charcoal, I set out to describe the great age and size of this king of trees, drawing the actual size on the beach.
