The Black Beacon on Orford Ness built as a lookout for the MOD has eight small rectangular windows on the top floor framing views of the sea surface. A copy of the Beaufort wind scale sits on a windowsill enabling the viewer to read the force.
The series of paintings describing each force, was developed for the 2006 Salthouse Festival referencing the Viking use of the nave for drying sails. Printed onto transparent film they acted like stained glass as the sunlight moved round the church all day.
